Where is this???

Looking at this picture one may think this is was taken in Italy. I will admit I was in Milan at the beginning of May but this was in fact taken in Dupont Circle in Washington D.C. I used to work at this restaurant and this was our patio. The view was good and the palm trees made it feel as though you were somewhere tropical and fun.

Taking A Break

I am taking a break for an unspecified amount of time. I have done over 100 pictures which was my original goal. I love photography and I have had a great time sharing it. I am planning on returning I just need to take some time to read a good book and to not have to think about posting a picture. Thank you to all who have visited and left comments. Someone Special

This was taken in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. There is a large number of steps that lead down to the river so I am shooting looking up towards Ann. A very simple shot but I like it probably because we had a great evening and the sunset was beautiful, what more can I say Ann is a lot of fun to be with.

Well I made it-I have posted 100 photographs on my blog every single day without missing one. I want to thank everyone who has stopped by to look at my pictures.
This being my 100th picture it grabbed my attention because of the nice warm light, dark red frame and of course the elephant!!! Abstract is what I enjoy shooting the most, thanks again!!

This is the view from the top of the Washington monument looking at Virginia which is on the other side of the Potomac river. The Lincoln memorial is at the very end and the World War II memorial is the circular stone structure down towards the bottom middle of the photograph.

U.S. Capitol Window

As I was making my way up to the top of the dome of the U.S. Capitol building I went past this window and saw the U.S. flag flapping in the wind. I really like window shots such as this photo especially when the glass is old and wavy.

Smokey the Cat

This is my diabetic cat Smokey. He gets 2 shots a day to help keep his blood sugar in line, of course I can't say much last year I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes--I digress.... I like this picture because he looks as though he is pondering the great out doors from 10 floors up. He also looks a bit funny as I take the shaver to both of my cats because their fur is just way too long!!!

U.S. Capitol Rotunda & Sky

A while back I got the opportunity to go on a tour of the U.S. Capitol building. This was not the average tour, it was a tour of the dome and the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol building. This was one of the photographs that I walked away with. This was taken at almost the top of the capitol building and as high as we could go!!

Last Week when I went to take pictures of the Cherry blossoms this is what I got. The sun rising over the Jefferson memorial in front of the tidal basin. Sometimes luck plays a part in what you capture and this was one of those moments.

Fire Side Chat

I took this photo at the FDR memorial in Washington D.C. This bronze statue represents the fire side chats (as they were called) that were given by Franklin Roosevelt during WWII. He would update them on the status of the war since CNN had yet to be invented!!! Notice where all the kids are sitting on this sculpture--his knees are well worn!!

FDR Memorial--Bread Line

This is another image from the FDR memorial. These bronze statues represent the Great Depression in the United States right before and leading into WWII. If it had not been for WWII who knows how long the depression would have lasted here in the U.S. Of course when I look at this image it can be hard to feel the loss and pain when the cherry blossoms look so beautiful in the background!!!

Cherry Blossoms No. 1

Every year in Washington D.C. the Cheery blossoms come out and of course so do the tourists. This picture was taken at the tidal basin with the Jefferson memorial in the background. I also took this shot to show how many people were out taking pictures and this does not even represent it very accurately. If you include me there are 6 people taking pictures from this one spot. I hope to get some closer pictures of the Cherry blossoms today. When I took this picture they were not at their peek yet. We shall see!!!

I was in Washington D.C. this morning taking pictures of the cherry blossoms. While they are not at their peak yet they were quite beautiful. If you decide to visit D.C. during the cherry blossom time go early, otherwise you may not really enjoy it--too many people!! This picture above is from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial which is right by the tidal basin and all the cherry blossoms hence the reason I was able to get this cool picture. Hopefully tomorrow I will be posting a cherry blossom picture but until then enjoy this picture.

Don't Wear Shorts!!!!

I saw this cool looking bench when I was walking around Old Town. I love the linear look and the beam of sun light going accross it. When summer arrives this bench is not only going to leave lines on the back of your legs it is going to get hot. People who sit in shorts will look as if they were just "branded" with nicely seared bench lines on the back of their legs!!! Even after I wrote that part about searing legs it still looks comfortable.......doesn't it???

Flower Abstract No.1

I am awful at thinking of good titles so I thought I would name this photo in a similar way that Stuart Davis named his painting that is hanging at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. I took this photo on a bright sunny day in Old Town, Alexandria. Through dodging and burning the picture now shows the emotion and feeling that I find enjoyable in photography. The Flower Show Begins

Yesterday was a beautiful day in Northern Virginia and the flowers were out. I went to Old Town and started taking pictures and got quite a few that I will be posting in the days to come. I am not sure of the name of these flowers but they grown on what I call a Tulip tree, I say this because the flowers look like Tulips. The back drop is Christ Church which I have photographed and posted here before. Looking forward to your comments--Dave

Waynewood Easter Egg Hunt

Every year Waynewood residents with children bring them to the park for an Easter egg hunt. There are three different age groups for hunting the eggs. The youngest kids look for their eggs in the tennis court area. The group that I have photographed is between 4 and 6 years of age. The plastic eggs are scattered all over the grass, when the whistle is blown kids run all around with their baskets scooping up as many eggs as possible. There are probably 200 hundred eggs on the ground along with other goodies--with in 2 minutes everything has been picked up, it is quite amazing to watch kids cleanup so fast!!!

This is a night shot from a couple of weeks ago. This is the Potomac river, in the background you can see the Wilson bridge and that streaking light is from the strobe of an airplane getting ready to land at National Airport.

This is the Alexandria Seminary Road U.S. Post Office. I was trying to find some historical info on it but I have had little luck. This is a very small post office and I know it is very old because they don't make them like this anymore!! The fact that it is still open is amazing.

This is my cat Drake, I use the term "my" loosely after all he is a cat!!! Rubbing his cheek bones on corners is one of his most favorite things to do. As you can see by this picture he is in a total blissful state. Life is good!!

Several weeks ago there was a St.Patrick's day parade in Old Town. I unfortunately missed it because I went hiking instead. When I was driving back this was what was left, people clambering to get a drink--I love it!!! This is nothing compared to what this weekend will be like--It is going to be crazy!!

Place Dumpster Here!!!!

Everytime I go to Sportrock to do some indoor rock climbing and yoga I see this dumpster in the parking lot. A little history--there are many car repair shops next to Sportrock and this is one of the car shops dumpsters.
So I am a bit confused. Place the dumpster here is that on the white concrete???? Here could be anywhere but if it was anywhere then it would not be here....hmmmm!!! OK, so I got it, as long as the dumpster is place on the ground where the arrows are pointing.....Then that would be here which could actually be anywhere but then it wouldn't be here...ahhh forget it!!!

Icy Footprints

Metro Rail

This is a photo of our subway here in the Washington D.C. area. It is actually stopping at the King Street stop in Alexandria. The Metro or subway runs between Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland. Most of the time the Metro is a great source of transportation, it is quick, clean and fairly safe. I would recommend it to anyone visiting this area!!!

Muddy Foot Prints

Last weekend this is what I encountered while spending some time in the great outdoors--lots of mud!!! Yesterday we got another 3 inches of white fluffy snow to create more mud when it melts. I shouldn't complain, I got a great abstract picture I really like and it was unexpected--just like the people who weren't expecting to walk through the mud!!!

I really like it when there is fog on the Potomac river because I can usually come away with a nice photograph. The little ripples in the water and the silence in the air create a mental image of peace and relaxation, the way life should be!!

Lots of Water!!

For starters this photo was taken at Great Falls on the Maryland side, which is about 25 minutes from Alexandria. We have had so much snow and rain (more rain than snow) this is the result. The Great Falls area has a lot of water so much that many of the hiking trails are closed because they are muddy and under water. The water was moving so fast that one could hear boulders hitting each other from the force of the water, it was pretty cool!!

Fluffy Clouds

Life can often be like the clouds in the sky; one minute they're here the next they're gone. This winter has not presented many days with nice clouds that I have wanted to photograph, when I looked up and saw these I had to capture them. Shortly after I got this picture the sky got somewhat gray and a big nondescript mass moved in. The clouds passing by reminds me of life--always moving!!!

This is a shot of Christ Church in Old Town Alexandria. There is so much going on in this picture; different shapes of windows, brick then wood, four sides then eight sides. The best part is the beautiful blue sky!!!

Salted Stairs

I was out in Old Town with my camera and I came across these stairs covered in salt. I guess you can never over salt as long as you don't fall even though I would say this salt job is on the verge of overkill. Just my $.02 cents!!!

Red Flowers

Hilton Sunset

That big building is the Hilton hotel in Mark Center Alexandria, wow--that was a mouth full!! I got home from work the other day and this is what I saw. A beautiful sunset so I pulled out the camera phone and grabbed a slice of time.

Rebar and Lots of it!!!

This picture is from the bridge that goes across I-495. It is the same place I took the picture of the rusted wire roll (look at earlier posts to see it). If you enlarge this picture you will see the rusted wire that holds the rebar together. When it gets warm again they will pour concrete on this and it will never be seen again!! I like the pattern, and the nice green color which just seems to go on forever.

Masonic Temple

This is the Masonic Temple in Alexandria Virginia. I can't really give an accurate description of someone who is a Free Mason so I will redirect you to Wikipedia's definition. My grandfather is a Free Mason so that is my other reason for posting this picture. I will say this much it is a very nice building to look at especially when the sky is really blue and the sun is setting.

Beached Coke Bottle

I was walking along the Potomac river and came across this old coke bottle sticking out of the sand. This is exactly the way I saw it, I didn't touch it or brush it off. I guess you could say this is one of the more attractive pieces of litter that washed ashore!!

Rusted Roll of Wire

When I was out shooting I came across this roll of wire. I really like shooting objects that are rusted or rusting. The color and texture always make it interesting to look at even if your first response is what the heck am I looking at!!!!

Three Bikes

What is it about bikes that makes them so nice to photograph? I am not sure I can really answer that question. Many people take pictures of the single bike leaning against the wall in some city. I saw these bikes outside a metro stop and had to take a picture. Please share your thoughts on this!!!

Green Hard Hat

I saw this hard hat and thought to myself, what a great use!! If I am not going to protect my head with it then I might aas well use it for my nuts and bolts. The flip side--it's an extra hard hat!!

Cupped Hands Dog Bowl

Over by the Kings Street Metro stop there is an Art Park (or at least that is what the sign says) where I came accross a drinking fountain that was equipped with a dog water bowl. This of course is not your ordinary bowl but rather a childs hand combined with an adults hand to form a cup or bowl for the water. Dogs don't know how good they have it!!!

Flower Pots and Sun!!!

While the reflection in the window shows trees without leaves it also shows that the sun is out and that it is bright and sunny. That image coupled with terra cotta flower pots makes me excited for the arrival of spring and summer. I really like the warm colors and glow that this image provides.

American Flag

I have seen this truck many times driving around with its framed American flag in Old Town. Apparently the transmission is frozen so the truck is stuck, hence the parking ticket in the upper right hand corner!!!

Metal Rebar

This is a pile of rebar and scrap metal from the Wilson bridge project. There is a lot going on in this picture but sometimes my mind feels like this picture so it is good to get it all out!!!

Bridge from the Park

This is another shot from the park over by Belle Haven. The large white bridge is the Wilson bridge. This is the completed side, when the other side is finished the bridge will be a twelve lane wide drawbridge. I believe the largest in the US, correct me if I am wrong!!

Energy Efficient Light

It may be hard to see but this street light in Old Town, Alexandria is using an energy efficient bulb. Many may say big deal but with the talk of global warming and our dependence on oil sometimes the little things might be the start of something big. If the environment is not your thing then think of it this way, less energy, less cost, less taxes, OK--so less taxes is pushing it but it was worth a try!!!

Side View Mirror Sunset

I was driving home and the beautiful sunset was to my back. I thought what a great way to get a picture--use the side view mirror. I did, and this was what I got, pretty cool for using a camera phone while driving down the highway!!!!

Rotten Wood

I am at again with my abstract pictures. This was taken at a park along the Potomac river over by Belle Haven in Alexandria. I really like the linear aspect of this picture down to the pieces of wood that are falling off. Lots of texture and detail--I love it!!!

Winged Clouds

I really like the color and shape of these clouds. The left side looks like the wing of a butterfly and the right looks more like the wing of a hawk or an eagle. I guess it could be anything, what do you think???

HOV

HOV--for those not familiar with the term it stands for High-Occupancy Vehicle lanes. These special lanes require that you have 2 or 3 people in the car depending on which highway you are going to drive on. The benefit is that the speed limit is higher and the traffic moves faster. So what does this have to do with my picture?? Well, in Virginia these lanes switch directions depending on the time of day. In the morning there are 3 regular lanes and 2 lanes separated by concreate barriers (HOV) going into Washington D.C. In the evening it is the same except the HOV lanes are now only for traffic leaving Washington D.C. If you are in a hurry but don't have the correct amout of people to drive in HOV you may want to avoid it, the fines range from $50 US Dollars to $1000. The State Troopers will sit and just count people in cars and wait to bust that one person trying to be sneaky!!

Long Sidewalk

This picture was taken on the side of Christ Church. I really like the long red brick sidewalk. In Old Town there is a lot of red brick. Some of it is very even and nice and some is a little bumpy to say the least!!!

It was time to move on from the railroad pictures, I actually have a few more but were starting to seem dreary. This sundial sits outside of Christ Church in Old Town. I always enjoy capturing color that is unique or caused by weathering so I was in luck when I got this picture.

Interesting Lock

New Construction

There is quite a bit of new construction in Alexandria due to the close proximity to Wasington D.C. Thankfully there is a Metro stop (subway) right by these new buildings because the last thing this area needs is more cars on the road!!!

One More Bridge Please!!!

Yes, one more bridge please!! Those of you who have been to California may have noticed all the bridges going here and there. Well, Northern Virginia is presenting a challege to California's tight hold on that title. This is a portion of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project that has not been completed yet. I will be posting more pictures of the craziness, in the mean time enjoy!!!

I was walking around Old Town and I found this water fountain. I am sure there is some technical name for this fish like sculpture. Personally, it looks like a pissed off fish with a mustache and big lips!!!

Blue Sky

I went through 5 photos trying to come up with one that I liked. This photo was by far the most simple, yet it was the most pleasing to my eyes. I mentioned in my post yesterday that it has been very gray out, well the blue sky in this photo was the key. It is so nice to see bright, vibrant, saturated color that I just could not pass it up!!!

Evening Rush Hour

This is the evening rush hour on 395 South towards Richmond Virginia. I was driving home from work and I just could not get home fast enough to take a picture of the sunset. With the weather so gray lately, anything with color has to be considered for my daily photo.

First Snow of the Year

Well it is almost February and this is our first snow of the year. The snow had just started to fall while I was bringing in the groceries. On the left side of the picture you can see a very large tree reflecting onto the roof of my black car and the white specks are snow. I really like the eerie quality of this picture.

Rusting Pole

I know this does not look like a pole but this is what it looks like close up. I really enjoy texture and detail in my pictures and this high tension wire mount with rusting metal and peeling paint makes the image stand out!

No matter what your news preference, this street corner in Old Town has you covered. During the work week you can find the Washington Post Express, (far left) free, quick news (but full of ads). Of course you may need an apartment, so you can check out the listings in one of many apartment finder brochures. If an apartment is too college-ish then a new home may be your thing. Don't forget to check out a listing of cars, unless you want to walk or take public transportation. Finally, there are actual news papers such as the Washington Post and USA Today; however, the term "newspaper" should be used lightly in the US because the only news you are likely to see is coverage of Iraq - more of a nightmare than news.

The Dog & Owner vs. The Biker

I am going to write about this but after I wake up in the morning!!!! Well it is morning now!! I was out taking pictures of Old Town When I happened to get this shot. Nothing really exciting but I thought it was somewhat funny. The dog and the owner seem to be staring the biker down and vise versa. There is that look of uncertainty which I kind of like. If this is too much of a stretch then look in the upper left hand corner at the Misha's Coffee sign. Misha's makes great coffee and espresso, they roast their own beans which is why it tastes so good. If you are smoker you may like it even more because they allow smoking. Beware though, the people who tend to hang out at Misha's are a bit different (just my opinion!!) Go for the coffee, you can't go wrong.

Life From High Up

I have taken many pictures from my high up apartment window. The lighting always changes along with the weather which makes each day unique. The fog pictures from below were taken from the same vantage point, yet look very different. Much of Alexandria looks like this, the tree are bare and the grass is green. In the months to come the trees will bloom and fill in what looks to be a huge open parking lot.

Need a Pen or Pencil??

Sometimes I do abstract photography and today is one of those days. This is the life of an illy espresso can, first it contained wonderful espresso then it moved on to holding my pens, pencils and my bio-thermometers (on the right and in the back). This picture has a textural quality where (refer to post below) it feels as though I could easily grab a pen or pencil and start writing. Some how all my pens and pencils wind up here instead of staying at work!!!!

Rusting Fire Hydrant

I really enjoy taking pictures of objects or things that have texture related features. This yellow rusting fire hydrant is a perfect example. When enlarged the paint bubbles, chips and rust show the harsh reality of sitting outside in the elements. This slow deterioration has created something that is very simple yet very enjoyable to look at. The saturated colors add to the detail and make this image stand out.

What's Wrong with this Picture???

Well for starters it is only mid January and the flowers are starting grow and come up out of the ground. Virginia is not known for being really cold but I am from Minnesota so I am a bit jaded!!! This winter has been very warm, yesterday it was around 65 F degrees and last Saturday it was 75 F degrees. As somebody who loves to ski, hike and enjoy the outdoors I find it very disturbing that the seasons are starting to be less defined and just down right messd up. I am hoping that this is not a pattern or that it is some isolated blip. Only time will tell....
